About

Some words about my work

It has taken me quite some time to embrace the concept and benefits of creating a picture in camera. Sketching a scene with pencil, and filling between the lines with watercolours, occupied many a morning in my youth. I still draw from that early inspiration and connection with the landscape.

My image capture methods have evolved somewhat and, are still a work in progress. I have always been drawn to a less spontaneous approach. Lugging around a sturdy tripod where possible is not everyone’s cup of tea, I know, but for me, taking the time to visualise a scene, then anchoring the tripod legs into the earth, has allowed more freedom of expression.

Many images I now make, also have deliberate camera movements, producing a more abstract painterly effect. Anchoring the camera has also allowed me to explore image focus stacking methods, both in the field, and studio, expanding my image making opportunities.

I was not an early advocate of digital imaging, digital anything in fact… but the industry moved quickly and invested heavily in digital technology, so I guess I was carried along for the ride, leaving the film process behind.

More recently, my trustworthy Nikon digital camera bodies, and a couple of buttery smooth Zeiss manual focus lenses have been gathering a little dust, as my appreciation and user understanding grows for the Hasselblad X1D camera system, and beautiful Hasselblad leaf shutter lenses.

I hope you enjoy my more recent images; I have certainly enjoyed capturing them.
